Where Band Students Soar
The WCHS Band program offers students of all skill levels the chance to explore, perform and grow in a supportive musical environment. From beginners to award-winning musicians, our ensembles provide daily opportunities to develop technical skills, collaborate with peers and experience the joy of making music together.
Students participate in concerts, competitions, community events and masterclasses, building not only musical talent but also teamwork, discipline and leadership skills that last a lifetime. Supported by dedicated instructors and the Music Booster community, the program ensures every student has the resources and experiences needed to thrive both in music and beyond.

How do Band Ensembles prepare students for college and beyond?
Being part of the Churchill band program is a powerful learning experience that extends far beyond music. Students learn to collaborate with peers from diverse backgrounds, building confidence, empathy and a strong sense of community. Band teaches teamwork through active listening, accountability and shared responsibility, while leadership skills develop naturally through preparation, communication and example. Students also build discipline and strong work habits by balancing academics, practice and long-term goals. Most importantly, band fosters emotional expression and connection through collective music-making, creating meaningful experiences that prepare students for college, careers and life beyond the classroom.
Which Booster-funded purchase has had the biggest impact?
The new audio system for the band room has been an incredibly helpful educational tool. Having the ability to record the groups and provide instant feedback is a great tool. The added Bluetooth connectivity makes sharing musical examples quick and easy.
Why is participating in a WCHS Band Ensemble special?
Each year, we remind our students that by the time they graduate, performing in our band program may represent the highest level of musical excellence they ever experience. Many alumni return to share that their college ensembles do not match the musicianship or artistic standard of our program. Unless a student chooses to major in music, they are unlikely to perform again in an ensemble of this caliber. Aside from this, our program is special for the community and friendships that are formed. So many students in our program remain friends far after high school, and they maintain that connection through their love of music.
What surprises you most about teaching the Band Ensembles?
What has surprised me most is the talent of my students and the growth I witness in them as both people and musicians over the four years I teach them. Many arrive as fresh-faced, immature ninth graders and leave as dedicated, reliable leaders, ready to take on the most significant musical responsibilities placed before them. It's truly the best part of my job to see how these students change, become more comfortable in their own skin and graduate with a love and appreciation for music.
