Mastering Every Measure

The WCHS Choral program offers students a welcoming and rigorous environment to grow as singers, musicians and performers. From first-time high school singers to advanced auditioned ensembles, our choirs emphasize healthy vocal technique, musical literacy, collaboration and expressive performance.

Students participate in concerts, festivals, adjudications, community performances and large-scale productions, gaining confidence, discipline and leadership skills along the way. With strong support from dedicated instructors and the Music Booster community, the choral program provides meaningful musical experiences that prepare students for success in college and beyond.

How do Choir Ensembles prepare students for college and beyond?

Participation in the Choral program teaches students far more than how to sing. Students develop collaboration skills through active listening and shared responsibility, build confidence through performance and learn discipline by balancing rehearsal commitments with academic demands. Choir fosters communication, leadership and empathy while encouraging students to take ownership of their growth. These skills translate directly to college readiness, workplace success and lifelong engagement with the arts.

Which Booster-funded purchase has had the biggest impact?

The addition of upgraded audio equipment and recording technology in the choir room has significantly impacted student learning. By recording rehearsals, the students hear themselves immediately and objectively, which helps them refine their technique and progress more quickly.  The Yamaha Clavinova has also become an invaluable instructional tool. Its ability to perform in multiple styles, transpose instantly and record accompaniments makes rehearsals more flexible, accessible and musically rich. Students benefit from stylistically appropriate accompaniment and the opportunity to rehearse with recorded tracks that reinforce accuracy, independence and musical confidence.

Why is participating in a WCHS Choral Ensemble special?

The WCHS Choral program offers students the opportunity to perform at an exceptionally high level while forming lasting connections with peers who share a love of music. For many students, this program offers the most advanced choral opportunity they will encounter outside of a professional career. The close-knit community, shared dedication, and love of the craft make choir an unforgettable part of the Churchill experience.

What surprises you most about teaching the Choral Ensembles?

What continues to surprise me is how much students grow during their time in the program, not only as singers, but as people. Watching students gain confidence, develop leadership and discover their voice over four years is incredibly rewarding. Their commitment, resilience and passion for music make teaching choir a joy every day.
